Trucks In The 252 - Morgan Kane
By: Robert Heikens
Morgan Kane is a young man on a mission. This Currituck native has his sights set on dominating the Monster Jam series this season in his Max D monster truck. Morgan has driven many monster trucks already but now sits in the seat of the famous Maximum Destruction truck and has plans on winning more races and freestyle events than ever before!
Morgan, aka "Korgan Mane", a high school nickname, is a 24 year old, 2008 graduate of Currituck High School where he was a soccer player with a ton of talent. The years of 1998-2000, Morgan raced go karts in the junior sportsman division 1&2 placing third in the points! After graduating, Morgan received a scholarship for soccer and went to Campbell University for a semester where he became the first person ever in Northeast North Carolina to play for a division 1 University that was ranked 23rd in the nation in 2008. Morgan, a forward for the team transferred to Cape Fear in Wilmington, N.C. in 2009 to continue his education and love for soccer.
Morgan started driving his good friend, Adam Andersons ride truck at the Digger shop in the spring for college money and would even come home on weekends to drive the truck while also taking summer classes and being a full time student! He knew he needed a good education and worked hard with the help of his parents, Robin Kane and Susie Harris to make his dream come true. The fall of 2009 and the spring of 2010, Morgan was a full time student athlete training with the soccer team!
June of 2010, Steve Sims of Stonecrusher racing asked Adam Anderson at a show about a driver position and wanted a young but knowledgeable person to hire and Adam knew Morgan would be a good person for Steve to hire! Morgan got the call on a Sunday afternoon sitting in the ride truck shed to drive Monster Mopar. Morgan, who knew the creator of the truck, Gary Wiggins, jumped at the opportunity and Gary Wiggins even later became a crew chief and mentor for Morgan. In the 2010-2011 season, Morgan's first show driving Monster Mopar was in Louisville, Kentucky at Freedom Hall. Morgan not only drove the Monster Truck for Steve but also worked at his business, Custom Stone, operating equipment and racing on the weekends. Trained by veteran crew chief Tommy Powers, Morgan got his CDL license at the age of 20 and his full permit at 21 and helped drive the hauler to and from shows while also driving heavy equipment for Custom Stone December of 2012, Monster Mopar was changed to Monster Magic. Morgan raced it in Minneapolis at the Metrodome beating out 16 trucks including Gravedigger, Max D, Avenger, and Son Uva Digger for the racing win ! Morgan also received the "Rising star of the year award in 2012 driving a second Stonecrusher truck when Bryan Wright was hired to drive the Monster Magic truck .
May, 2012, Morgan left the team and returned to drive Adam's ride truck until he received a call from Keith Speller of Feld Motorsports to drive the "HULK" monster truck in Holland and Sweden in huge soccer stadiums filled to capacity! Next came the "IRON MAN" truck where Morgan would crew and drive the truck, compete in his first "Young Guns" shootout in Vegas, and come back the following year and barely got edged out in the final race by "Bad Habit"!
Morgan again went overseas but this time to the middle east to Dubai for the first ever monster truck show there. He also went back to Holland and Sweden to packed stadiums! In June of 2013, he again was called to drive but as a fill in driver for Max D in Quincy, Illinois! The show went so well, the following month Tom Meents called him to join the Max D team as a full time driver/crew chief. This was a dream come true but he also talked extensively to his role model and friend, Adam Anderson for guidance. Adam assured him that this was the opportunity of a lifetime and Morgan joined the team! Team member and co-crew chief Josh Dyche pushed him to become a better driver and Morgan listened.
Monster Jam started a new series for the "Young Guns" to compete in with the series winner getting a spot in Vegas at the World Finals! These up and coming drivers all trained at IMG academies in Bradenton, Florida where Morgan felt right at home training again. The new series includes Monster Trucks, ATV, and UTV racing at each show. The points series starts in January in Des Moines, Iowa but fans got a glimpse in Hampton,Va. last month and was received well by the fans! The format will consist of Monster truck racing, Razors (speedsters) next, Monster Trucks again, ATV heats 1&2 and main, Monster Truck donut competition, Razors (obstacle course), and finishing with Monster truck freestyle. The drivers are looking forward to the new format and the chance to compete in Vegas!
Morgan donates time and makes appearances for the ALS association as a spokesman for raising money and awareness for the organization. He also created and launched his own line of hats to get his message out to work hard, stay humble, be honest, and "Swing at every curve ball", his philosophy of life! These things were instilled in him by his parents and remains his driving force in life.Pride and a strong work ethic will keep this young man at the top of his game, he enjoys working on the truck, always keeping it ready to go, looking great for the fans! He likes things organized and in its place and works hard to keep things that way.
Morgan wants to thank everyone for the support, his parents for all of their help and guidance, Adam Anderson for believing in him and being a great Boss, Ryan Anderson for helping him become better, Gary Wiggins, Josh Dyche, Steve Sims, Tommy Powers, and his new co-crew chief Wes Costamire! It's been a long journey for Morgan but I have no doubt his ability, drive, and perseverance will take this young man to the top of the sport and maybe even this superstar will build his own truck design one day, time will tell! Morgan has a bright future ahead and I believe he will be in this sport for decades to come, "SWINGING AT EVERY CURVE BALL"!

FOCUS on a Purpose – Art Auction
FOCUS on a Purpose – Art Auction
Currituck County has been captured in a new and original way by local artist Jason Letourneau of FOCUS252. A Sportsman’s Paradise – that’s what Currituck County is best known for as Currituck is rich in hunting opportunities. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Currituck Sound, Currituck offers exceptional hunting and a dense population of waterfowl. It’s with this long standing tradition within the hearts of Currituck residents that artist Jason Letourneau created his vision of Currituck local art. “Waking up to the sounds of hunters may startle new residents, but to us locals it’s a joyful noise”, stated Letourneau.
This inspiring and joyful noise has been truly captured in Letourneau’s recent watercolor paintings. These framed 16x20” originals have been kept in the studio for viewing only; however, Letourneau has released them for a new and exciting cause. Through his studio, Letourneau has started a need-based scholarship opportunity open to Currituck County students only that began with the graduating class of 2015. These beautifully rendered one-of-a-kind originals will go to auction beginning December 5th and ending on December 23rd. These originals will be on display for bidding at The Gun Shack and BJ's Carolina Cafe, both of which are locally owned and operated. Bidding starts at the reserve price of $300 for the set.
Proceeds from this silent auction will remain in Currituck County and will benefit the children this county has raised, proceeds will go directly to assist students in need that have been accepted into higher education facilities regardless of current academics or future course of study. “I didn’t have the highest GPA when I was attending Currituck County High School”, states Letourneau, “my educational career didn’t really ‘click’ until I attended college. It was at this time that my GPA turned into a 4.0 and I was very blessed to graduate with honors. It’s with my experience that I feel a scholarship that isn’t directly related to current academics may assist other learners like me”. The “Light my Way” scholarship fund remains available to Currituck County students and is advertised on the school’s website at: http://www.currituck.k12.nc.us/Page/2869
Letourneau has been a resident of Currituck County for over 26 years and has been expanding his artistic skills for over 9 years. His education in the arts begins at Pitt Community College and ended at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Once relocated back to his hometown, he opened his own studio named FOCUS252. “We keep our focus on our local area, which many refer to as the ‘252’. I was raised here, this is my home, and it’s time to showcase Currituck as more than a route to the Outer Banks in a way that people will proudly display in their homes”, says Letourneau. His studio, FOCUS252, is located at 6556 Caratoke Highway and features an indoor/outdoor photography studio, local art, jewelry and Sip&Paint courses where aspiring artists may take affordable and fun lessons while enjoying select beverages. For more information on FOCUS252, please visit
www.focus252.com, like the studio on Facebook at www.facebook.com/focus252 or contact the studio at (252) 453-2550.

Trucks In The 252 - Spare Parts
By: Robert Heikens
Spare Parts Mud Racing team consists of a group of close friends and families that have a passion for mud racing! These friends, men and women, love the sport and family oriented action that mud racing provides. They all have enjoyed playing in the mud with everything from golf carts, four wheelers, trucks, and even derby cars and tuff trucks.
Spare Parts started out building a purple chevy pick-up truck pulled out of the woods by Eddie and Sherry Wissman, Paul Garrenton, and Tom Bowen. The truck was built with "spare parts" lying around Eddie's shop! This truck started it all and soon other friends wanted to do the same, they all came together and built several other trucks. Now the team consists of Eddie & Sherry, Paul Garrenton, Casey Carr, Chris Connie, J.P. & Jen Marshall, J.R.Rishel, and Tom Bowen who has since moved to Michigan but still comes back to race and visit.
Spare Parts runs several trucks that include their famous "pink truck" called "Save a Rack" which is a square bodied, stock 350 ci. motor running 4.88 gears with lockers in the street class. Casey Carr's truck,"Down To The Wire", is a white '88 Chevy truck with stock suspension, Dana 60 front end,14 bolt rear on 44 inch tires. Sporting a Buster Melson Racing engine big block chevy motor, this truck has plenty of power for the super street class. Paul Garrenton occasionally runs a '87 Suzuki Samaria with a self proclaimed 1.6 liter motor of Pure Fury, running tractor style tires but is also building a new, four link truck with a Buster Melson Racing engine in it for next year. J.p. & Jen Marshall salvaged a '96 Suburban from Obx Chevrolet and have competed at Monster's on the Beach and five tuff truck competitions with Jen driving over Mother's Day weekend at Monster's on the Beach! Chris Connie has an '80 model Jeep CJ 5 with half ton running gear that he runs in tuff trucks. Tom Bowen and his '89 leaf sprung Dodge, Big block, one ton running gear truck still runs in Michigan but is in the middle of rebuilding his truck now.
These friends have been hunting, fishing, competing in bbq competitions, racing, and hanging out together for fifteen years. Spare Parts Bbq has completed in several competitions and placed 7th out of 68 competitors at their first event in Little Washington, N.C at the "Smoke on the Water" event!
Hometown, hard working, life loving, redneck, back yard racers with hearts of gold sums up this group of friends. They work and play hard and always have a good time together! That's what the sport of mud racing is all about!

The Sand Dollar Bazaar is having a Christmas Extravaganza!
Debbie Harris, the owner, with her assistants, Janice and Mary are busy working on Christmas magic for all of us. Just a walk through the door and the smells of Christmas are in the air. Debbie was making cinnamon potpourri jars at her workspace. Janice and Mary were decorating while coordinating a dining room set load up for a client. I had a hard time nailing down the busy, often absent Debbie, who constantly was lending a hand to her staff. She was absent to help load the furniture in her client's truck, answering the phone to schedule ladies for an upcoming class. Debbie stopped to chat with vendors about new products and services soon to premiere. I sat there at the workspace and took in what Debbie is making happen for so many of the folks who happen to have a "Store within a Store." Tammy Krueger, Thriftique Boutique owner, is in the front window with an amazing array of her "General Finishes" painted furniture finds. Tammy's china cabinet in the front window was not there but a short time. I photographed it one week for a blog and the following week it was gone. The point is, if you see something in the window you like, stop and get it or you are going to miss out. The address is 800 W. Ehringhaus St., Elizabeth City. Stop by today.

Trucks In The 252 - Bogging For Boobies
Saturday's race at Dennis Anderson's Muddy Motorsports Park was all about breast cancer awareness and raising money for it. The turnout of people was great, showing that Currituck county and other local residents are always eager to help out a good charity!
Atv racing, autocross, truck show and shine, and street, super street, unlimited, tuff truck, side by side mega truck, and iron x classes were all part of the show Saturday, all putting on great racing for the crowd.
The ATV racers along with the autocross racers entertained the crowd keeping them hollering for more. The staff and crew at Muddy Motorsports Park kept the event on schedule all night, kept the competitors safe through all the carnage of the day and again put on an action packed show that kept the crowd cheering the whole day! This was the last race of the season for Muddy Motorsports Park and I would have to say that they went out with a bang! The racing action was great with some crashes and breakage of trucks but a good time was had by all.
BOGGING FOR BOOBIES race will always draw a good crowd of people with a good number of very competitive trucks coming out to support and raise money and awareness for breast cancer and the never ending fight to find a cure! God bless all and keep coming out supporting our local tracks and our awesome competitors! I would like to thank Casey Carr, Spare Parts race team, Kings of Mud,Busted Knuckle films, Mud Nation, and Christine Ackerman for all your help and pictures! Hope everyone has a wonderful 2014 and a prosperous 2015!
