The Sand Dollar Bazaar is having a Christmas Extravaganza!

It is happening!  The time of year when you know in your heart all is well because that joyous seasoning is coming.  Last week as you were driving down Ehringhaus Street in Elizabeth city, a special treat was in store for all passing by.  Christmas is happening at The Sand Dollar Bazaar, "Stores within a Store."
Debbie Harris, the owner, with her assistants, Janice and Mary are busy working on Christmas magic for all of us.  Just a walk through the door and the smells of Christmas are in the air. Debbie was making cinnamon potpourri jars at her workspace.  Janice and Mary were decorating while coordinating a dining room set load up for a client. I had a hard time nailing down the busy, often absent Debbie, who constantly was lending a hand to her staff. She was absent to help load the furniture in her client's truck, answering the phone to schedule ladies for an upcoming class. Debbie stopped to chat with vendors about new products and services soon to premiere.  I sat there at the workspace and took in what Debbie is making happen for so many of the folks who happen to have a "Store within a Store."  Tammy Krueger, Thriftique Boutique owner, is in the front window with an amazing array of her "General Finishes" painted furniture finds.  Tammy's china cabinet in the front window was not there but a short time. I photographed it one week for a blog and the following week it was gone. The point is,  if you see something in the window you like, stop and get it or you are going to miss out.  The address is 800 W. Ehringhaus St., Elizabeth City.  Stop by today.

Trucks In The 252 - Bogging For Boobies

By: Robert Heikens

Saturday's race at Dennis Anderson's Muddy Motorsports Park was all about breast cancer awareness and raising money for it. The turnout of people was great, showing that Currituck county and other local residents are always eager to help out a good charity!

Atv racing, autocross, truck show and shine, and street, super street, unlimited, tuff truck, side by side mega truck, and iron x classes were all part of the show Saturday, all putting on great racing for the crowd.

The tuff truck class was won by Luther Gagnon with "Just Blazin" with over a one second lead over the second place finisher. Twenty trucks competed in this class and kept the crowd on their feet cheering for all of the competitors. Street class, with seventeen plus trucks in it was was won by Johnnie Mizell in "War Horse" with the truck also grabbing third place with driver Sonya Mizell. Super street class, won by Johnnie Mizell in "Tetanus Shot" had a field of eighteen trucks with four trucks not completing the timed run! Will Dorsett, in "Wicked Wayz" placed third in the class without his well known father, Herby Dorsett, not attending while he was at a friend's wedding that day. Super modified class had eight trucks entered with only six running! Ray Atkins in "Haulin Gas" took the number one spot with a 4.81 second pass.Unlimited class with thirteen trucks entered, only seven trucks ran with Jason Berry and "Amped Up" winning. Jason had to rebuild his truck after a terrible crash at the North vs South race at the park when he crashed and flipped the truck near the finish line. It was great to see Jason come back and win this class! Side by side mega truck class, won by James Tauchen with "Nasty Habit" had the best combined time of 60.758 seconds. Weston Anderson's first race with his "Bog Hog" came in fourth in the class at his first race of the year, quite an accomplishment for the aspiring young twelve year old driver. Iron x class had four trucks compete out of the ten trucks entered to run.James Tauchen with "Nasty Habit" won the class and the truck also placed second with Kyle Bickers driving! The other two competitors did not finish the tough and long course. Brian Vicks truck,"Pick Pocket" had a strong run going ahead of his competitor when he broke the intermediate shaft in the transmission near the finish line ending his night.Michael Snyder with "Bug Nutz", after finishing third in side by side mega truck class had a horrific crash that tore his truck up and put him out of the race! Michael was ok with the quick response of the track crew. Danny Ray Leach in Spank-a-nator had a good first pass in side by side mega truck class but had motor problems in the second run, popping the burst panel on the supercharger and  the blower belt coming off cause of it which put him out for the day.

Weston Anderson's first race in "Bog Hog" had the crowd erupting in cheer for the youngest of Dennis' sons in mega truck and unlimited class but Dennis pulled him out of Iron x class feeling that he needed more seat time before running the longer and more difficult iron x class! The three passes that I saw Weston run were impressive to watch as the twelve year old Anderson looked like a veteran racer! Yielding a fifth place finish in unlimited with a time of 5.147 seconds against some of the best trucks around was spectacular and a fourth place finish in the two pass, combined scoring race in side by side mega truck class proved that Weston has what it takes to run with the big boys and he impressed the crowd for his first time out!

The ATV racers along with the autocross racers entertained the crowd keeping them hollering for more. The staff and crew at Muddy Motorsports Park kept the event on schedule all night, kept the competitors safe through all the carnage of the day and again put on an action packed show that kept the crowd cheering the whole day! This was the last race of the season for Muddy Motorsports Park and I would have to say that they went out with a bang! The racing action was great with some crashes and breakage of trucks but a good time was had by all.

BOGGING FOR BOOBIES race will always draw a good crowd of people with a good number of very competitive trucks coming out to support and raise money and awareness for breast cancer and the never ending fight to find a cure! God bless all and keep coming out supporting our local tracks and our awesome competitors! I would like to thank Casey Carr, Spare Parts race team, Kings of Mud,Busted Knuckle films, Mud Nation, and Christine Ackerman for all your help and pictures! Hope everyone has a wonderful 2014 and a prosperous 2015!

Trucks In The 252 - Weston Anderson - "BOG HOG"

By: Robert Heikens

There are many famous families involved in professional motorsports racing and Currituck county is home to one of the biggest! The Anderson family now has three members racing in one form or another.  Dennis, Adam, and Ryan are all monster truck drivers that all started racing in the mud. Dennis now has his youngest son, Weston, working his way up the ladder to success in his own mud truck called "BOG HOG"!

"BOG HOG" started out as Dennis' street truck, GD 6, in the early 90's with the famous Gravedigger paint scheme, big block chevy power, one ton running gear, and 44 inch tires! This truck could be seen all over the OBX and was also used for displays and promotions for Gravedigger racing.GD 6 has seen all three of the Anderson men behind the wheel with Adam racing it at his 16th birthday party mud bog held beside the shop and house. After Dennis decided to build a mud truck for Ryan to race at his own Muddy Motorsports Park, the body was sold and the rest of the truck was built and transformed into the "Son Uva Digger" mud truck! A 565ci alcohol injected, leaf sprung truck with a willys body was raced all over the states at events with his father's "KING SLING" mega truck.

Needing to go faster to compete with other trucks, the chassis was four linked, and a 671 supercharger was added. Ryan kept on winning and proving the truck was a competitive piece! Ryan and Dennis both since have stopped mud racing due to their busy Monster Jam schedules and the time was right to build a truck for Weston!

Weston Anderson, youngest of Dennis' four kids, at the age of 12, will debut his mud truck at Muddy Motorsports Park on October 18th at the last race of the 2014 season at the park.Weston is a seventh grade student at Currituck middle school and is excited to race his 565ci alcohol injected with an Enderle single butterfly injection, 900 plus hp , willys jeep bodied truck at his father's birthday bash at the park. The truck is set up with 42 inch tall tractor style tires with custom made rims,Pro fab drop box, Overtime 20" travel rear shocks,18" travel front shocks,14 bolt rearend with a locker and super 14 bolt front end with open carrier and Overson axles, and a FTI 400 TH transmission with a 4800 rpm stall converter! Sponsors include MSD ignition, Overtime shocks, FTI transmissions, Pro Fab drop box, Spectrachrome, and mom & dad.

Weston got his start in power wheels racing, has tested mini monster trucks beside the Gravedigger shop, has done go kart stunts, mini van stunts, and even a bulldozer stunt at Muddy Motorsports Park! He now says he's ready to get behind the wheel of his own mud truck. Weston has always wanted to race and follow in his dads and brothers footsteps, eventually moving into a monster truck when the time is right! A crew of people have helped his dream come true! Clifford Thomas, Josh Garcia, Dan Bright, Paul Cohen, R.L. Arace, Richard Midgette,Ryan, Adam, Krysten, Dennis and Carisa Anderson have all helped with his sister, Krysten coming up with the trucks name!

Weston will be competing in side by side mega truck classes one ton truck , iron x, and unlimited classes and eventually doing some freestyle runs once he gets some valuable seat time and gets comfortable in his truck! He will run at Muddy Motorsports Park, Morgan's Corner Proving Grounds, Saluda raceway, Hogwaller, Jump n Run, West Georgia mud park, and Jacksonville!

"BOG HOG" shirts will be for sale at park at merchandise trailer, just look for Carisa. Hats, koozies, flags and stickers will be coming soon also.

The whole family has been behind the build of "Teeny Mans" truck and Dennis and Carisa look forward to everyone coming out and cheering for Weston.

Again this proves that mud racing is a family sport and Weston will have a top notch crew at the track with crew members Clifford Thomas, Josh Garcia, and R.L. Arace there to make sure the truck is ready for action! These men have tons of experience, building not only this truck, but also Son Uva Digger and King Sling and being the crew traveling with the trucks! They have built strong, safe trucks that compete with the best trucks out there.

The Anderson family is a true racing family and a wonderful asset to the community. The Muddy Motorsports Park that Dennis built provides a great family oriented place for competitors to race at and a place for the community to come out and enjoy! Dennis, Carisa, Adam, and Ryan do so much for the community and have earned the respect of everyone they meet.Weston will continue that tradition with his family behind him the whole way.Mud racing is a great family sport and the Anderson family proves that!

Come on out to Muddy Motorsports Park on October 18th "Bogging For Boobies" and watch the youngest of Dennis' boys rip it up and put on a show for the crowd like only an Anderson can do! "Teeny man" and "BOG HOG" will be a competitive force in the mud racing world and I personally think it's a great sport for young men and women to get into because it is a family sport!

Trucks In The 252 - North Vs South

Trucks In The 252 - North Vs South

By: Robert Heikens

North vs South mud race at Dennis Anderson's Muddy Motorsports Park was a day of some of the best names, best trucks, and best crowd I think the park has ever seen! The side by side mega truck races and one ton truck races showcased some amazing trucks with talented drivers! The night of racing included a tough truck competition with drivers putting stock trucks to the ultimate test and several jumped over the last hill and jumped higher than some mega truck racers! Several trucks had crashes but the track crew responded to all quickly, getting the drivers out safely and relatively unharmed .

Exciting racing between Carolina Spank A Nator and Opelicious race team was one of the great races of the night with the 252 areas own Carolina Spankanator winning. Milkman, Jason Sasser and Pela Motorsports, Adam Pela stunned the crowd with their awesome diesel mega trucks with Jason Sasser winning in a close race where both trucks almost got crossed up over the finish line jump! Pela landed hard, blowing out a rear tire while Jason landed hard on one side blowing out both front and rear tires! The action was super and the racers that came from other states put a show on for the crowd and kept everyone cheering all night long. Although all of the carnage of the night took time to get cleared and out of harms way, the track crew did a good job but stayed busy all night long! With a warm day followed by a brief, cooling shower and a beautiful night, it was a great day for a mud race and Dennis Anderson's Muddy Motorsports Park didn't disappoint the crowd and hosted a wonderful event for everyone!

Trucks Gone Wild had their film crew and merchandise trailer there also and helped with this awesome event to make it one of the best the east coast will see this year!

Voters opinions muzzled?

It seems as though the local paper wants to muzzle the opinions of the citizens. Dr Adams sent a letter to the local paper and was told that they would have to edit it because it concerned candidates for office. Dr Adams then replied suggesting they remove mention of the candidate but run the letter leaving the logic and argument in place. They edited the letter to remove his intent. He was upset at this and contacted us (and the lawyers) to set this straight. We all know how much the local echo chamber wants their candidate to win. Should we as voters trust a group where the ends justify the means? A group of lawyers felt strongly enough to take an ad out to voice their opinions. Mr Adams followed up with a letter citing scholarly reasons (with citations) on why the lawyers have a sound argument. We do not feel that these opinions should be stifled. We think that the voters should be informed and that they can make up their own minds. Here is the letter unfiltered and then the edited version as printed.

This makes you wonder. Have the other letters that support the local papers candidate of choice been edited?  Or worse yet, can we trust anything printed in the paper?

Holly Koerber - Audette's article in October Albemarle Tradewinds

We are excited to have Holly Koerber - Audette as a writer in the new edition of the Albemarle Tradewinds. Holly adds a new dynamic to our magazine. She is quickly becoming known as the Ayn Rand of our area with her political observations and commentary. Here is her first article - Holly Koerber - Audette, unfiltered.

954, 1151, 2208, 2601.   These are the kind of numbers Andrew Womble confronts daily since becoming District Attorney for the first Judicial District in November, 2013. They represent cases he inherited and the number of days individual defendants have spent awaiting trial at the local tax payers’ expense. Most importantly, these are the number of days VICTIMS have been waiting for justice to be served.

When Andrew grew up in small town Northeastern North Carolina, you didn’t lock your doors and you were as likely to get a lecture from the police chief about doing the right thing as you were your parents. People flew the flag with pride and civility among members of the community was the rule, not the exception. There may have been mischief but it was a far cry from the kind and frequency of crime we all deal with today.

Andrew was raised to respect the law and law enforcement. Education was valued and your best effort expected.  Andrew exemplified these traditional values as high school valedictorian and law school graduate with honors.

It was his work ethic combined with results that caught the attention of Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Richard Parker who appointed Andrew Womble the first Chief Public Defender in the 1st Judicial District (Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Pasquotank and Perquimans) in 2004. With offices in Chowan, Dare and Pasquotank Counties, the Public Defender’s office grew to 10 assistant public defenders and Andy was subsequently reappointed as Chief Public Defender in 2008 and 2012. In 2012, Andy was asked by the State of North Carolina to assume responsibility and locate and manage a Public Defender’s Office for the 5 counties in the 2nd Judicial District. The Washington, NC office of the Public Defender’s Office opened in early 2013 and Andy oversaw all indigent criminal defense cases for the 12 counties of the 1st and 2nd Judicial Districts. His district was the largest Public Defender district in the State, by both geography and by number of counties.

It is this combined almost two decades of trying cases and management that makes Andrew so qualified to be District Attorney, a fact his peers recognized when they voted to recommend him to the Governor for appointment as District Attorney. Having represented indigent defendants, Andrew knows exactly how important it is to have victims of crime well represented in a timely manner. Just as a coach for defense must know offense to be effective. He knows the exorbitant expense to taxpayers that result from lengthy delays in prosecution of cases and he knows the heartbreak and long-suffering of victims as the wheels of justice do not move.

Andrew brought his passion for justice, his experience establishing and managing a public office involved in justice and his trial experience as an attorney in private practice to his role as District Attorney.  Just as his peers recognized his abilities when they recommended him to the Governor for appointment to District Attorney, they recognize the positive impact he has had since taking the job:

“In almost 20 years of practice here, I’ve never seen the staff and attorneys in the District Attorney’s office be as friendly, upbeat, organized and responsive as they have been this year under Andrew Womble’s administration & leadership.” Danny Glover, Partner, Teague & Glover Law Firm

“Andrew Womble has the kind of experience necessary for a District Attorney – Leadership Experience.  Along with Andrew’s 19 years of experience in the legal profession, he is credited with establishing a top-notch public defender’s office and leading that team effectively for nearly 10 years. He is a well-respected and ethical leader. ”  Eddie O’Neal, Partner, Twiford Law Firm

Andrew Womble realizes the value of feeling safe in your home, schools, and communities. Asking for the public’s trust in contributing to this is not something he takes lightly.  The world is a different place from when he was raised in rural Northeast North Carolina but the values he was raised with continue to serve him well. Do all things you undertake with dedication, determination and decisiveness.  That’s how District Attorney Andrew Womble will continue to manage justice for victims in North Carolina.

Currituck Author: Sheila Grandy - Margaret And The Wreck Of The Momie T.

Ever ponder what life was like on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in the 1920s?  Inspired by actual stories told to her by a relative that as a child lived at the Caffey’s Inlet Life Saving Station during that time, Currituck County author Sheila Grandy has penned a story that is an interesting blend of actual shipwreck facts and life as experienced through the eyes of Margaret Dowdy.
The characters in the story are a hardy crew true to the heritage of living on the rugged Currituck Outer Banks.  From wild ponies to the little schoolhouse of eight pupils, the author blends the joy of childhood with the adventure of a historic shipwreck.  Many details are shared about the struggle of the crew aboard the 475 ton American Schooner, Momie T. and the life-saving technique of breeches buoys used in the early Coast Guard at the Life Saving Station.  Photos are included of the ship remains that washed ashore in 2010 and 2013 along with interesting antidotes with historical perspectives on other local settings.
For a story that the entire family can read together look for the book cover illustrated by Currituck County artist, Lane Myers, of a young girl with large spectacles reflecting the image of a ship in distress.  Margaret and the Wreck of the Momie T. is available at The Cotton Gin; Roanoke Island Festival Park Museum;   Museum of the Albemarle; Hennie B’s; Duck’s Cottage Downtown Books; and the Island Book Store in Corolla. The author may be contacted by email:  MomieT1920@gmail.com
