Art + Craft Extravaganza
FOCUS252, located at 6556 Caratoke Hwy in Grandy, will be hosting their first Art + Craft Extravaganza on Saturday, July 19, 2014 from 10:00am-6:00pm. “We are very excited,” stated Jason Letourneau, Owner of FOCUS252, “this gives the community a chance to view the raw talent we have and artists a chance to have their work seen, appreciated, and purchased!” The July Arts + Craft Extravaganza has the following dedicated artists at this time: Beaded Beauties; hand knit and strung beaded jewelry and hair accessories, Sara Baumer; repurposed including hand painting and distressed dishes, Ricki Ferrence; nature photographer, Simply Original Art by Ekert; beautifully painted canvases, serving trays, and wine glasses, Lane Meyers; original artwork and watercolor limited edition signed reproductions, and Denise Thomas; repurposed wine bottles and creative hand crafted décor. “We are all about our local community,” says Jason Letourneau, “as long as we offer the gift shop within our Photography Studio, this will be our inventory; hand selected, hand created, one of a kind items from local artists. There is nowhere else like this; you never know what the artist will create, or when it will be in stock, it makes for a constantly changing inventory of quality products direct from the artist at affordable prices!” FOCUS252 will accept applications for new artists to show during the Art + Craft Extravaganza through June 30, 2014; artists are to request an application via email at focus252photography@gmail.com and may read more about the event, including view the Facebook event, at www.facebook.com/focus252 or simply pick an application up in person. In the past, artists that desired to place their work within the gallery to sell at FOCUS252 were brought before a panel and selected appropriately. This has now changed, FOCUS252 will be allowing artists to show monthly on their grounds through the Art + Craft Extravaganza, at which point the jury will review each artist’s work and begin their selection. “The arts are something very close to my heart, everyone has a voice and for a great deal of people artwork is the means of communication. It allows us to speak to each other differently; we can convey our concept in a vague manor that is open to interpretation or through a more direct impact method. We have the talent in our area, we supply a place for these talented artists to reach their clientele, and it is our hope and end goal that we have the opportunity to become a safe haven for all aspiring and growing artists. Currently within our gallery, we have original art that is priced for every budget; customers have been able to purchase an original, direct from the artist, for as low at $16. That’s less expensive than most manufactured décor!”, says Jason Letourneau. Please join us for a day of celebration of our local talent, visit with the artists who have been preparing for this day for months, and enjoy the new location of our local Photography Studio, FOCUS252.

Another Update
Yesterday June 19, 2014 a powerful storm ripped though Moyock, NC. Tons of rain, wind, lightning, and thunder. While we are all safe in our house, lightning struck a neighbors home on Summit Farm Road. I dont personally know this family but I do know that when a family is in need, a community should pull together! Please donate what you can. I just know what I have seen on FB and it was a husband, wife, daughter (12) and cat and a dog. Anything that you could be willing to donate would mean the world to a family that has nothing but the clothes on their back at this point. Lets pull together and show everyone how Moyock is such a great place to live! Any other donations other than money can be dropped off at her friends house Rendy Sheilds at 196 Summit Farm Trail. Thank you for any amount that you can donate!

EMS Broken Trust
By: Terry Weathers
The County Commissioner Meetings are starting to be a late night circus. It seems the procedure for public comment has drastically changed in recent weeks. I will admit my ignorance where Mrs. Kitty Etheridge and her land are concerned. I really don’t know the facts and don’t have an opinion on the county’s position regarding the land. I do, however, have an opinion on the gross disrespect from a commissioner to one of his constituents. My understanding of the public comment session was that a citizen has the right to stand at that podium for three minutes and make his or her comment and state his or her opinion. Never have I seen a rebuttal that lasted TWENTY minutes after a public comment. I didn’t think that was the way it was supposed to work. To the general public, it all looks very rehearsed and well thought out. Why is it that there is a twenty minute long tirade/explanation regarding Mrs. Etheridge’s issues, yet we can’t get a comment at all from anyone regarding EMS issues? Is she easier to target because she is one lady standing up there alone? Well, that certainly makes you all look big and tough; you have (almost) managed to intimidate an older citizen who has challenged your position. She is right, she has been respectful each time I have seen her at the podium. So, if this isn’t a bullying tactic that is being used, it sure appears that way to everyone watching. I don’t know the facts of the case but I will say I feel sorry for that sweet woman standing up there just trying to voice her opinion before a few men in expensive suits that continue to pounce on her. You sit there with your pictures and slide shows and do an “impromptu” presentation and the rest of the county can see right through the shenanigans.
Another week has come to a close, from what I understand, nothing has changed with the EMS personnel matters. The person accused of bullying is still bullying and he has his folks bully and threaten when and where he can’t (seems he is on vacation). For weeks, all we heard was “Put it writing. Sign your name to it.” Well they did. And you turned them away on a technicality. So now, as I understand it, you have let the accused bully see these names. I wonder if his treatment of them will be better now. What an asinine move on your part. This looks like you planted the ultimate trap and we, THINKING you were finally going to do the right thing, took the bait. Now the same people we wanted to help, will suffer once again. They will suffer because they did what you asked them to do. The best way to describe your actions are as shameful. Shame on you for continuing to turn a blind eye as others suffer at their places of employment while you sit in your cushy offices and give orders. Shame on you for you blatant disrespect for our citizens that go to work each morning with the intent to save lives. Do you have a slide show rebuttal in response to my comments? Would you like for the public to see how EMS describe their hostile work environments? Would you like to be embarrassed by citizens of this county being made aware of what you are allowing those in power to get away with? I doubt it. Bring on your presentations. Bring on your slide shows. I have letters for my presentation. I have firsthand accounts of what is taking place while folks sit back and do nothing. The twenty seven employees will suffer because you are choosing a personal agenda over the right thing to do. These folks finally found enough courage to sign a document stating how they felt and you pushed it away. What does it take? I truly don’t know how you can look at yourselves each morning. You have clearly let a few favored employees in our system make a mockery of your ability to manage and control (or lack thereof). I heard a story the other night of an elderly citizen that went for a blood pressure check at one of the stations. She told EMS personnel that she waited as long as she could because she knew the system was in shambles and was nervous about coming about getting her blood pressure checked. BRAVO! The citizens that need EMS the most are concerned about utilizing the services provided because they know the mess that has been created. The system is currently seen as a joke and is broken. You have been made a mockery of and no one trusts you. The bullying continues, the threats to be transferred haven’t stopped and yet you do nothing. Nothing, but plant a trap for twenty seven trusting employees. Since the “bully” has been in position of power, seventy (plus) have walked away from a career that takes years to build. You see nothing wrong with this? Are you going to call that a coincidence? How did the “fact finding exploration” go? What other facts could you possibly need other than twenty seven employees put their necks on the line to make you aware of what is taking place under your watch and you have once again turned a blind eye? Or do you just turn your heads once again to the people that truly care for their community and want nothing but the best for them?

Community And EMS Pleas Fall On Deaf Ears?
By: Terry Weathers
Another week as come and gone. Sadly, it appears little has changed. I have witnessed the Commissioners sit in “our” seats and say, “we have heard you.” Have you? Have you really heard us? And if so, Are you listening?
We have stood up there at the Commissioners meetings each week, clearly creating a nuisance to the board, and used our three minutes to beg and plead for help and those pleas have been met with little more platitudes. I can’t imagine being in a position to help someone and answer the cries of people only to turn a blind eye, all for the sake of a personal agenda. Do you feel so untouchable that you are just ignoring the letters, emails, blogs and words of the people that vote you in and out of office? How about the people that pay your salary with tax dollars? How does it feel to have citizens doing a job that you should be doing? It looks ridiculous. You should be questioning county employees and their management tactics, not us. I have begun to question the integrity of your title and your ability to do your job.
“In EMS we are all patient advocates meaning we are a supporter, believer, sponsor, promoter, campaigner, backer, and/or spokesperson. We take this job seriously. Now it’s time to advocate for your family; your brothers and sisters. By doing so you are representing what is good and honorable about brotherhood and family and can restore faith in it. And please remember this in the words of Albert Einstein... ‘The world is a dangerous place. Not because of the people who are evil; but because of the people who don't do anything about it.’”
These are the words of someone that has no voice. How does it feel to know that county personnel under your charge who feel that there livelihood is at stake, that their voice in the matter has been taken from them and that any hope they have for justice and peace of mind has deserted them favoring personal allegiances over sworn duty. In my opinion, at best you are derelict in your duties and at worst you are simply a cruel and compassionless human being.
“The process has to be fixed no matter how much right or fight you do.....the public has trusted co management to have a (right) process and they do not.” The fact that people have lost faith in you and no longer trust your ability to lead should have, by this point, signaled a change in your behavior. It has not.
I would like to know, if the County Manager were to receive a letter of grievance tomorrow, what would happen? What would be your next step? Are you going to hire someone else to evaluate management skills? Are you going to get another “audit” done? Are you going to let even more good, hardworking, selfless county employees seek employment elsewhere because you have no backbone and integrity to stand of for what is right? I’ll say this, I’ve done my own audit and evaluation of your management skills. It wasn’t a difficult task and didn’t cost tax payers a red cent. All I had to do was watch the Commissioner Meetings. I watch you make continuous excuses for your favorite employees, I watched you turn a blind eye to people in a position of hurt and ignore their cries for help. Are you willing to let all of these employees seek legal counsel and get our county get tied up in the court room for the next 4 years? Let me remind you, we don’t do all that well in the legal system as a county. All of this speaks volumes of your ability to “manage” a county.

Treasure Hunter
Milton and Angel Sawyer, who own Treasure Hunter at 112 North Road Street in downtown Elizabeth City, have a veritable treasure trove of items from generations near and far for sale in their 3,500 square foot storefront. Collectibles like antique furniture, vintage pyrex and glassware, lamps, books, bicycles, original artwork, toys, steamer trunks and suitcases, musical instruments and jewelry are artfully arranged throughout the building.
The jewelry display is of particular significance - quite a bit of the Sawyers’ business is in buying gold and silver of all kinds.
“We pay more than anyone else in Elizabeth City,” said Milton, an Elizabeth City native. “We are honest and fair.”
Milton prides himself on providing fair prices to both his buyers and sellers.
“I’ve always had the philosophy of buying things reasonably and selling things reasonably.”
This philosophy has allowed a quick turnover in the store, always bringing in more new items.
“What this store has to offer is a great variety of things not being found in antique stores anymore,” Milton said.
The unique displays and interesting items draw customers from all over the country to Treasure Hunter, which has been in its present location for the past five years.
“All my life, if I liked something or thought it was cool, other people did, too,” Milton said.
To see what Treasure Hunter has to offer, visit the store or _____.
